While on the train, she survived by being thrown through a window. A Jewish man, who came to collect the dead for burial, found her barely alive and smuggled her out of the prison.

Her two other brothers were also killed and her mother, Frieda, was murdered by a German solider when she stepped in front of Alicia, saving her life. Alicia was only allowed to live because the German soldier ran out of bullets; his last taking the life of her mother. After the war, Alicia spent time in a displaced persons camp in Badgastein, was sent to a British concentration camp in Cyprus, and then joined the Israeli Navy.

Alicia Appleman-Jurman is the author of the book Alicia: My Story, which she wrote over a three-year period while living in Holland. Appleman-Jurman is the only survivor from her immediate family of seven people; her mother was shot in front of her. Despite escaping from custody several times and having several "near misses" when she hid during raids in the ghetto, Alicia witnessed numerous atrocities by Nazi authorities against Jews.

Appleman-Jurman contracted tuberculosis, from which she did not fully recover until her stay at a Belgian orphanage after the War. It was from there that she boarded the ship Theodor Herzl, bound for the Jewish homeland of Eretz Israel. And although the voyage ended with the internment in a prison camp on the island of Cyprus by the British of everyone, Appleman-Jurman did finally arrive in Palestine eight months thereafter. God answers prayers and if you dont believe me you go out and look at the moisture that has fallen today; Alicia brought that rain with her, and God brought her here.

He does hear prayers; he heard her mothers prayers and Alicias prayers. May I present Sister Alicia. Theres not much I can say after such a beautiful introduction, but Sonia was rightfully calling me Sister Alicia; this is my tenth time with your congregation.
